World Record Challenge
Tim Turner has a target to be the first man in history to sail at a speed of over 100 km/ph over a straight-line distance of 500 metres.
In nautical terms this is an average speed of 54 knots. Already the world’s best have nudged this as a maximum speed at the Luderitz 2008 edition of the Speed Challenge. Take a look at www.luderitz-speed.com to review in detail the 2009 Speed Challenge.
01 November to 28 November, 2009 the scene is set on the west coast of the Continent of Africa. Specifically, the Luderitz 2009 Speed Challenge, accredited as a World Sailing Speed Record Council competition will see the world’s best windsurfers and kitesurfers convene at the remote coastal town of Luderitz to take maximum advantage of the 40 knot plus winds. In 2008 new world records were established, even better is expected for 2009!
I am committed to a two-week campaign, 01 November to 14 November at Luderitz to represent Royal Perth Yacht Club and Australia. In 2008 Australia was not represented at the Speed Challenge: 2009 will be different!
I am excited and confident that with the right winds and the flat water conditions, personally setting a new Australian record (48.14 knots) is achievable. The World Record was established at Luderitz in 2008 and stands at (50.57 knots) and is likely to be eclipsed in 2009.
